SOUTH AFRICAN AUTHORITIES SEIZE 17 RHINO HORNS FROM A JOHANNESBURG SHIPPING WAREHOUSE
A multi task-team enforcement operation seized 17 rhino horns hidden in a metal geyser at a warehouse near Oliver Tambo International Airport yesterday.
HAWKS spokesperson Carol Mulamu , said the authorities received intelligence about a suspicious consignment declared as chicken feed mixture that had been dropped off at a Kempton Park warehouse for export to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a well-known trafficking transit-hub commonly used in the smugglers’ pipeline to South East Asian countries like Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.On closer inspection, the enforcement team members found a large blue metal geyser inside a shipping crate. Using a metal grinder, they prized the lid of the geyser open, where they found the stash of 17 foil-covered rhino horns buried beneath the chicken feed.The horns weighed approximately 72.40kg.“Investigators are following up on leads regarding a suspect’s identity”, she added.
