The Botswana Police Service (BPS) has appealed for information leading to the arrest of poachers who killed and de-horned a rhino in the north-western Ghanzi district.
BPS Ghanzi Station Commander Superintendent Modiro Lekone said the female rhino was shot and de-horned. Its two-week old calf died later, apparently of hunger and distress.
The decomposing body of the rhino was found this week with both horns sawn off. It is believed to have been killed between the 9th and 22nd in a private farm near Ghanzi town.
“We have not made any arrests as yet, and we appeal to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the culprits to come forward and help,” Supt. Lekone said.
Without giving details, Supt. Lekone said police were very concerned because this is the second rhino poaching incident recorded in the Ghanzi District Policing area in 2018.
