John Simpson at his pompous worst – dripping with inaccurate generalisations and self-perceived gravitas. His conclusion about extinction “maybe, but maybe not” did not really match what others said and the script contradicted what speakers said – Simpson claims great success for demand reduction in China only for the next speaker to say it wasn’t working. Totally ignored increasing elephant numbers in much of southern Africa or the role of corrupt African governments in protecting the illegal ivory trade. Given he was chairing a session at a conference with some of the world’s leading wildlife trade specialists he could have shifted his own elephantine bulk or got a producer if he couldn’t be arsed, to get some more voice or even found a voice, shock-horror, from Africa. The prince of pomposity strikes again.
