Durban – Two people have been arrested in KwaZulu-Natal after being found in possession of a rhino horn, as well as pieces from a hunting rifle and ammunition, police said on Monday.

“Members of a national project team set up to combat the poaching of rhinos in the country arrested…a man and a woman,” said Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo in a statement.

He said that officials had been “working around the clock” following up on information received, when on Sunday midday they spotted a Mercedes Benz which they had been investigating, in Ntambanana in KwaZulu-Natal.

“The driver, a 44-year-old woman, and a 33-year-old male, from Hazyview, Mpumalanga, were arrested after the team found a rhino horn and parts of a hunting rifle and ammunition in the vehicle.”

The two are expected to appear in the Ngwelezana Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

“They are likely to face charges of unlawful possession of a rhino horn and unlawful possession of ammunition.”

Further charges may be added, said Naidoo.
