THE UPND has written to the Electoral Commission of Zambia demanding the suspension of ECZ director Priscilla Isaac and two other officials who have been accused to trying to manipulate election results.
In a letter addressed to ECZ chairperson justice Esau Chulu, UPND secretary general Stephen Katuka narrated the events that led to the arrest of PF agent Samuel Chavula.
“We report that Mr Samuel Chavula was seen several times entering the computer verification room from 12:30 hours today (Friday), collecting provisional results. He was confronted at around 17:00 hours and found with an ECZ host official accreditation card which he was using to enter the restricted area,” Katuka explained.
“He was later apprehended and taken to Mulungushi Police Post where upon interrogation he admitted that he was given the official accreditation by an ECZ employee and was being supervised by Mr Brown Kasaro in the presence of Mr Chomba the deputy director for elections who expressed ignorance and denied knowing him. He requested Mr Kasaro to come and identify him.”
He further stated that Kasaro admitted having facilitated for Chavula’s accreditation on Isaac’s instruction.
“The said Kasaro admitted having facilitated for his accreditation under the instruction of the director of the ECZ, Priscilla Isaac. The gentleman was searched and found with a piece of paper where he had recorded the presidential totals and also election results for Kafulafuta Constituency in Masaiti district and also a phone that contained messages to and from Mr Kelvin Fube Bwalya instructing him where to forward the results after he had collected them,” Katuka wrote.
“The said Samuel Chavula has since been detained at Lusaka Central Police Station and a docket has been opened. The gentleman confessed that he was working with a syndicate comprising of Mr Kasaro and two others.”
He demanded the suspension of the three implicated ECZ officials.
“Consequently, we demand that the following people whom he mentioned be suspended with immediate effect as this has already affected the credibility of this election; the director Pricilla Isaac, deputy director IT Brown Kasaro, Ms Theresa Phiri,” demanded Katuka, who attached copies of Chavula’s official ECZ accreditation card and the piece of paper he was caught with.
